TECNATOM, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is organizing a course on PHYSICS AND TECHNOLOGY OF WATER COOLED REACTORS THROUGH THE USE OF PC-BASED SIMULATORS, to be held at the TECNATOM facilities, located in San Sebastian de los Reyes, Madrid, Spain, from November 4th to 15th 2013.

The training course will provide a group of international participants with a comprehensive and up-to-date review of water-cooled reactors science and technology through the use of the IAEA PC-based simulators.

PC-Based simulators operate on personal computers and are provided for a broad audience of technical and non-technical personnel as an introductory educational tool, as well as for students interested in delving into nuclear engineering and technology. These simulators have been revealed as a powerful and very effective hands-on educational tool for such purposes. It is important to remember, however, that the application of PC-based simulators is limited to providing general response characteristics of selected types of power reactor systems and that they are not intended to be used for plant-specific purposes such as design, safety evaluation, licensing or operator training.

The two-week course will consist of lectures and hands-on training covering fundamental and advanced concepts such as:

  • Introduction and historical background of water cooled reactors
  • Simulator familiarization
  • Reactor physics and core design
  • Plant overview and system description
  • Plant dynamics and safety
  • Normal operation and transient recovery
  • Operation during accidents and malfunctions
 

The course is limited to 25 participants, and the lectures are geared to graduate students, university professors, researchers, engineers and regulators in the field of nuclear engineering.

The participants will also engage in team discussions. After attending several lectures, the participants will be separated into teams and given topics for discussions relating to the lectures. The participants have will the opportunity to actively participate in the lectures and team discussions, which will help them to achieve a deeper understanding of the contents of the lectures and enable close collaboration among team members. Additionally, working with the PC-based simulators enables a deeper and long-lasting understanding of the physics and technology of water-cooled reactors.

APPLICATION: The course fee is 1,800 € including taxes. Course fee includes:

  • 10 days of lectures
  • Coffee breaks
  • Technical tour to Full Scope Simulators (Westinghouse and Siemens-KWU PWRs)
 

The housing fee for nearby hotels is: about $ 68 US dollar per person, per night, including taxes. Housing fee includes:

  • Single room with private bathroom
  • Air conditioning
  • Internet access
  • Access to 24 hour service centre
  • Breakfast
 

The housing fee is optional, as some participants may choose to stay elsewhere. Information about Accommodation will be submitted per email to the course participants. As a rule, travel and subsidence expenses of the participants should be borne by the home institution. Every effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare. However, limited funds are available for some participants, who are nationals of, and working in, a developing country. Such support, including a waiver of the registration fee, is available only for those who attend the entire activity.
